CRUISE PORT
Charleston's cruise terminal is located on the edge of the city's historic district on Washington Street. The cruise terminal building opened in 1973 and is part of a series of warehouses that make up Union Pier.
Passengers on ships calling in Charleston can easily walk to the city's historic district's attractions and shops. There are also facilities at the cruise terminal that can accommodate coaches for shore excursions to more distant attractions. Charleston's cruise port has long been controversial. Cruise passengers spend money and thus contribute to the economy of the region. However, local residents object to the cars and other traffic associated with passengers embarking and disembarking for cruises. In June 2022, it was announced that Charleston will no longer be an embarkation port after 2024. The existing cruise terminal will still be used but the port is limiting the number of cruise ship visits to 104 a year. Furthermore, only ships with a passenger capacity of less than 3,500 will be allowed to visit. Plans to build a new state-of-the-art cruise terminal have been shelved. |
